Bathroom Remodel Cost
Many wonder, is a bathroom remodel worth the investment? Is there a way to update a bathroom without breaking the bank? Yes and yes! Bathrooms are a great room to remodel because there are unlimited choices; you can choose to change only what is important to you! Unless you’re reconfiguring the space, flooring, painting, and tiling can be done in a cost efficient manner.
This post will guide you through some things to consider when remodeling a bathroom. You do not have to update all of these things to give your bathroom a new look! You can mix and match any of these. You decide what is important to you in terms of style, functionality, and budget! If you feel overwhelmed or unsure about any aspect of the design, a specialist at SilverLand Remodeling can help guide you through the process.
Bathroom Flooring
Today there are countless flooring options, you can create almost any look with the style of flooring you choose. The flooring typically found in bathrooms is tile. Tile flooring is diverse as it comes in many colors and materials, i.e. ceramic, porcelain, slate, travertine, etc. Tile flooring is also available in different square and rectangular sizes to fit your project’s needs and accent the space. However, tiles are not well insulated and thus feels cold on the feet, which can be a real drawback during Minnesotan winters. One option is to add heated floors to keep yourself warm during the winter months. Due to the endless options, tile flooring can accommodate any price range, and the total cost can be determined by your budget and style.
Another flooring option is vinyl planks. The word vinyl flooring makes most of us shudder and think of our grandparents’ bathrooms. However, vinyl planks have changed greatly in the last ten years and generally come in a wood style. Vinyl planks also run like a wood plank, are water resistant, and are durable for high transit areas. An added bonus is that vinyl planks are more insulated than tile, keeping your feet warmer. Vinyl planks are a relatively inexpensive material in comparison to other flooring options which makes it a great choice for larger spaces.
There are numerous other flooring options such as, hardwood floors or linoleum floors, that you could also consider depending on your style, budget, and your maintenance tolerance. Currently tile and vinyl planks dominate the market for bathroom floors and for good reason. Both can handle moisture, are durable, and fit into almost any budget.
Bathtub/Shower
When it comes to the shower/bathtub there are two main options for the walls, either a pre-made surround (often fiberglass) or tiles. Fiberglass surrounds are less expensive to install and easier to clean than tiles. However, they have a shorter life expectancy than tiles and generally there are limited options.
In comparison, there are more design choices with tiles, because there are about the same number of wall tile options as flooring tiles. Tiles tend to be more expensive than a fiberglass surround, but give a higher end look. Tiles also typically last longer as long as they are properly maintained.
Vanities
Vanities can add a lot of character to a bathroom. They define the space with a single or double sink as that dictates the size of the mirror and/or medicine cabinet, and the light fixtures. Therefore, vanities often are one of the more expensive items when doing a bathroom remodel because they are a must have, unless you choose a stand-alone sink.
If your bathroom remodel does not require a reconfiguration of the space, painting the current vanity can greatly reduce the cost of the project. Currently, many vanities are painted white, blue, or gray, which can coordinate beautifully with countertop and faucet combinations. However, many older homes have shorter vanities (by about 2 or 3 inches), which leaves them feeling dated. If your vanity is shorter, installing a new vanity can revitalize the space and may be worth the extra cost.
Toilets
Similar to vanities, toilets in older homes tend to be a bit shorter than modern toilets, making them appear more dated. Luckily, toilets are relatively inexpensive to purchase, unless you want it float (tankless) or be able to talk to you! Toilets come in two standard shapes, oval (or elongated) and round. Generally oval shaped toilet seats are more comfortable but take up more space. Round toilets take up less space which makes them an excellent choice for smaller bathrooms.
More Options
When remodeling your bathroom, you should consider painting the walls, updating light fixtures, changing the sink and shower/tub faucets, and think of what type of material you want for fixtures like the toilet paper roll, towel bar, and vanity handles (pulls). The most important thing is that all the fixtures match in color to tie the room together. From there, it completely depends on your style. Do you want something modern or more traditional? What colors draw your eye? What material do you think looks the cleanest?
