Here are some common deck options to consider while designing your deck:

Composite Decking or Wood Decking

Many homeowners wonder which type of decking boards are right for them. Composite decking is low maintenance as it never has to be stained or sealed. Most composite deck brands guarantee their product for 15- 25 years. Composite decking technology has improved greatly in terms of colors and overall appearance, giving it a more natural feel. However, composite decking has a higher upfront cost than wood.

Wood decking may be 2 – 3 times less expensive than composite decking upfront. However, wood decks require much more maintenance and care. Staining/sealing should be done at least every other year to preserve the wood and to give it a finished appearance. Wood decks are the more traditional approach but be prepared to treat them every few years to maintain their beauty.

Attached Deck or Free Standing Deck

Would you like your deck to be attached to your home or do you want it to stand on its own? Attached decks have better sight lines from the basement as there are no posts directly in front of any window. Attached decks are a great option if you want to enjoy a patio space underneath your deck or if you have a walkout from the basement. Attached decks also provide the ability to have a longer run from the house. Attached decks work best with newer construction.

Free standing decks have more posts to hold the weight of the structure, and these posts can sometimes be in front of windows, blocking the view. However, a free standing deck places no weight or stress on the house since the home is not used as a support for the deck. Free standing decks can be a great option for split level homes where attached decks may not be feasible or for older homes that may not be able to support the weight of an attached deck.

Footings: Concrete or Diamond Pier

Most of us are used to seeing concrete footing as the foundation of a deck. Concrete is still the most common footing used today. However, concrete means excavation. If you have beautiful landscaping around the deck area, this can be very painful! The other option is Diamond Pier footing; it is newer technology that shifts less than concrete during the freezing and thawing of our Minnesotan soil. It is more expensive but requires minimal excavation, leaving your landscape and yard intact.
